Today, as of this writing (May 29th, 2019), the price for coffee on the commodities market is 98 cents a pound.

This is an easy number to find. Search “coffee prices c market” and the first link you click will get you what you’re looking for. This number is dangerously low, but it wasn’t until Mike Nelson sought out what a coffee actually costs to produce specifically by working with one farm in Guatemala called Santo Tomás Pachuj—that I really understood just how dangerous that number was.

This month is all about upending expectations. Hannah Ulbrich, our featured roaster for the month of May, has been subverting expectations for years, and when we first started talking with her, she sent us a link to an article about the gender confidence gap. The article looks at top management positions at Hewlett-Packard, and showed that, “Women working at HP applied for a promotion only when they believed they met 100 percent of the qualifications listed for the job.”

 With 707*530*805, I’m trying to give back. 707*530*805 are all area codes for communities that were affected by California wildfires. A percentage of my release will go towards the Camp Fire Relief fund. My first community is my home, California, which has been through hell and back in the last couple of years. Folks I know and hold dear have lost homes and loved ones to these devastating fires. As someone who on a small level knows what it’s like to lose it all, I can’t imagine what these communities are feeling. Please know that if you purchase my release you will be helping my community in a small way!
